What is the Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium is additional funding provided by the government to state-funded schools in England. It is designed to ensure all children—regardless of their background—have access to the best possible educational opportunities, academic support, and enrichment experiences.

Who is eligible for Pupil Premium funding?

Schools receive funding for children who meet any of the following criteria:

  • Free School Meals (FSM): Pupils currently registered for FSM or who have been registered at any point in the last six years (known as 'Ever 6 FSM').

  • Looked-After Children (LAC): Children in the care of the local authority.

  • Previously Looked-After Children (Post-LAC): Children who have left local authority care through adoption, a special guardianship order, or a child arrangements order.

  • Service Children: Children with a parent serving in the regular Armed Forces or in receipt of a service pension (funded via the Service Pupil Premium).

How the school uses this funding

Pupil Premium funding goes into the school budget and is spent strategically to support learning across the school. Common ways we invest these resources include:

  • High-quality teaching: targeted professional development for staff to benefit all learners.

  • Academic support: 1-to-1 or small-group tuition, targeted interventions, and specialised literacy/maths resources.

  • Wider strategies: funding for school trips, breakfast clubs, extracurricular activities, and emotional or wellbeing support.

Why registered details matter

Even if your child already receives Universal Free School Meals in Reception, Year 1, or Year 2, registering officially for Free School Meals enables the school to claim thousands of pounds in extra funding for your child's education throughout their time at school.
